Vierheilig states that his mod was never planned as a community project. The "Character Pimper" was introduced in Version 5 when players were complaining about not being able to play with the real look of the original characters. The new music and HD models are optional, allowing to play a simply "improved" game. The more recent versions make the maps richer in terms of atmosphere, and features many new models (such as more vegetation, or many more shipwrecks along the Coast).
The new Alyx model, introduced in Version 5, is based on Brazilian model Adriana Lima. The suite of tools comes with a new version of editor Hammer, as well as tools to create animation, models, textures, materials particles and, of course, Source Filmmaker. Valve is particularly excited about the potential for sandbox-style creations based Alyx's mechanics, a sort of Gary's Mod for VR. They also provide unprecedented access to the latest version of Valve's Source Engine, which could prove useful down the line if modders decide to port an old game to it, or recreate classic levels within it. The most obvious is that creators can now dig deeper into the game's code and modify it to create new experiences, or mess around with joke mods.
The tools are still in beta, but the release is significant for a number of reasons. Valve has released the official set of mod tools for Half-Life: Alyx, and opened a Steam Workshop page dedicated to all of the game's mods. Half-Life: Alyx's mod tools have arrived.
